amazon fake reviews report
We study the market for fake product reviews on Amazon.com. These reviews are purchased in large private internet groups on Facebook and other sites. We hand-collect data on these markets to characterize the types of products that buy fake reviews and then collect large amounts of data on the ratings and reviews posted on Amazon for these products, as well as their sales rank, advertising, and pricing behavior. We use this data to assess the costs and benefits of fake reviews to sellers and evaluate the degree to which they harm consumers. The theoretical literature on review fraud shows conditions when they harm consumers and conditions where they function as simply another type of advertising. Using detailed data on product outcomes before and after they buy fake reviews we can directly determine if these are low-quality products using fake reviews to deceive and harm consumers or if they are high-quality products that solicit reviews to establish reputations. We find that a wide array of products purchase fake reviews, including products with many reviews and high average ratings. Buying fake reviews on Facebook leads to a significant increase in average rating and sales rank, but the effect disappears after roughly one month. After firms stop buying fake reviews their average ratings fall significantly and the share of one-star reviews increases significantly, indicating fake reviews are mostly used by low quality products and are deceiving and harming consumers. Finally, we observe that Amazon deletes large numbers of reviews and we document their deletion policy.
"We are now seeing scammers make direct transfers to cryptocurrency exchange services from victims accounts. At that point the money is as good as gone, quickly transferred on market to a traceless cryptocurrency like bitcoin, and then transferred on again to a totally unidentifiable 'wallet' elsewhere in the world, where the scammer can easily and cleanly transfer it back into a currency of their choice," he said. The research also reveals that one in five New Zealanders believe organisations are not doing enough to keep their personal information safe.

According to CBC, Airbnb shut down a Montreal-based host with the username "AJ" after an investigation revealed that AJ and other accounts were listing the same properties under different names while boosting each other's ratings and writing fake reviews that portrayed the accommodations to be much nicer than they were. From a legal standpoint, if Airbnb has knowledge of the misrepresented facts presented in fake reviews, and knows that customers are relying on them in order to book an Airbnb, a cheated customer may have a case against Airbnb for intentional or negligent misrepresentation. Of course, that's assuming that Airbnb's written terms of service do not successfully disclaim such representations. Either way, it's certainly bad press for Airbnb, and customers losing confidence in its review system can be devastating to business and its professional reputation.

The plaintiff further claims that she and other employees' paystubs stated that they performed labor in categories identified on each stub as "Regular Hours," "Personal Time" and "Vacation Pay," for which they received wages at their regular pay rates. According to the suit, workers did not perform any work that could be "properly and accurately" categorized as personal time or vacation pay. The plaintiff says that personal time and vacation pay are employee benefits that accrue over time and are not "a category of labor or services" for which they receive compensation. According to the case, the workers' wage statements failed to reference any documents or other information explaining why they were being paid for "Personal Time" or "Vacation Pay" and what labor was performed in these categories. A former Amazon employee claims in a proposed class action that she and other area managers were misclassified as exempt from receiving overtime wages, among other alleged violations of California law.
